Dog food transition
Switch the bowl overnight, and it’s often the dog’s stomach that complains first. Here’s how to introduce new kibble gradually and manage a change of diet without unpleasant surprises.
Why make a transition?
When a dog changes kibble, its digestive system may need time to adjust: the gut flora gradually adapts to a new composition. A gradual transition makes it possible to introduce the new food more smoothly, without the soft stools or loss of appetite that sometimes come with a change that is too abrupt.
A simple method over several days
- Days 1 to 2: a small portion of the new kibble mixed with the old.
- Days 3 to 4: gradually increase the share of the new kibble.
- Days 5 to 7: switch mostly to the new kibble if the dog accepts it well.
This method can be adapted to your dog’s sensitivity. To discover the product concerned, see the Maverick adult dog food page.
What to watch for
Keep an eye on your dog’s appetite, stool quality, energy and general behaviour. If in doubt, or if a problem persists, it’s best to seek advice from a veterinary professional.
